Summary
- The LDP single-handedly won more seats than the majority of the newly elected seats
- LDP, Kōmeitō, Ishin, and Kōmin, all of which are open to constitutional reform, exceed two-thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives
The LDP single-handedly won more seats than the majority of the newly elected seats
The ruling party won a landslide victory in the House of Councillors election.
The ruling party of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito Party won a majority of 125 seats in the House of Councillors.
LDP, Kōmeitō, Ishin, and Kōmin, all of which are open to constitutional reform, exceed two-thirds of the seats in the House of Representatives
The LDP alone won a landslide victory, securing a majority of the seats up for election.
The “constitutional reform forces,” which include the ruling party, the Japan Restoration Association, the Democratic Party of Japan, and independent parties that are open to constitutional reform, exceeded the two-thirds (166 seats) required to initiate constitutional reform.
Constitutional change was the goal of former Prime Minister Abe, who unfortunately was assassinated.
In the future, Japan will seek to do the following through a constitutional reform:
1. Define the status of the Self-Defense Forces
2. Eliminate the “unconstitutionality of the Self-Defense Forces” argument.
3. The current Article 9 of the Constitution should clearly state the Self-Defense Forces and mention the right to self-defense.
